You Are Not Who You Used To Be
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” - 2 Corinthians 5:17
One of the enemy’s most effective strategies is to keep you living in your past. He wants you to define yourself by your worst moments, your biggest failures, and the things people said about you when you were at your lowest. He knows that if he can keep you anchored to who you were, he can keep you from becoming who God has called you to be. But the gospel declares something radically different. In Christ, you are a new creation. Not a slightly improved version of your old self. Something entirely new.
This is not just motivational language. Paul was writing to a church in Corinth that was full of people with complicated histories: former idolaters, people who had walked through sexual immorality, theft, greed, and more. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says, “Such were some of you.” Past tense. The blood of Jesus does not just cover your sin. It transforms your identity. You are not defined by what you did before you met Jesus. You are defined by what He did for you on the cross. That is the foundation of who you are.
Write down one label from your past that you have been allowing to define your present. Then cross it out and write next to it: “New creation in Christ.” Put it somewhere you will see it this week.
Jesus, thank You that You make all things new. I refuse to let my past define my future. I am who You say I am, and You say I am loved, redeemed, and made new. Help me walk in that truth today and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
