When Anxiety Knocks
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7
Paul wrote Philippians 4:6-7 from a prison cell. Let that sink in for a moment. He was not writing from a comfortable study with all his needs met and his future secure. He was chained, uncertain about whether he would live or die, and yet he wrote with authority about peace. That is not denial. That is not toxic positivity. That is a man who had learned, through real experience, that God’s peace is available in places where human logic says it should be impossible.
The instruction is clear: do not be anxious about anything. Pray about everything. The shift from anxiety to peace is not automatic. It is a practice. It is the daily, sometimes hourly, choice to bring your worries to God instead of carrying them alone. And when you do, He promises something extraordinary: a peace that does not make sense, a peace that stands guard over your heart and mind like a soldier at a gate. You cannot manufacture that peace. But you can receive it.
Try what Paul prescribes today. Take your top three anxieties and bring them to God one by one, with specific prayer and genuine thanksgiving. Notice how you feel afterward. Practice this every day this week and watch what God does in your heart.
Lord, anxiety is a real battle for me. I do not want to pretend otherwise. But I bring it all to You right now. Every worry, every “what if,” every fear about the future. I trade it for Your peace, the peace that passes understanding. Guard my heart and mind today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
