“But he answered, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” - Matthew 4:4

Right after Jesus was baptized, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Forty days and nights of fasting, nothing to eat, nothing to drink. And when Jesus was at His weakest physically, the enemy showed up.

The first temptation the devil threw at Jesus targeted His hunger. The enemy said, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” The temptation was simple: use your power to satisfy your own needs. Do what feels good in the moment. Fix the immediate problem. But Jesus didn’t fall for it.

He responded, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Jesus didn’t argue. He didn’t even try to explain Himself. He simply responded with the Word of God. He was declaring that true fulfillment doesn’t come from just meeting physical needs. It comes from living by God’s Word.

The devil’s strategy was deeper than just getting Jesus to eat. He was trying to get Jesus to act independently of the Father. To use His power outside of God’s will. To prioritize His physical need over His spiritual mission. But Jesus stood firm.

If you are a follower of Jesus, I’m sure you face this same kind of temptation all the time. The enemy tries to get you to act on your own strength. To chase quick fixes and temporary satisfaction instead of trusting God’s timing and provision. He wants you to believe that your immediate desires are more important than your eternal purpose.

But Jesus showed you how to respond. When the enemy comes at you with temptation, the answer is simple. Go back to the Word of God. Stand on what He has spoken. Trust His provision instead of chasing after temporary pleasure.

The world will always try to get you to focus on what feels good right now. But true satisfaction comes from God alone. When you live by His Word, you will have what you truly need.

Remember, life is not just about filling your stomach or meeting your desires. It’s about living by the truth of God’s Word. When the enemy tries to convince you otherwise, respond with the same confidence Jesus did. “It is written.”
