The Grace You Cannot Earn
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9
Grace is the most counterintuitive concept in the universe. We live in a world built on performance. You earn your paycheck. You earn your grade. You earn your reputation. Everything has a price, and you are expected to pay it. So when we come to God, we naturally bring that same framework with us. We think we have to be good enough, disciplined enough, or consistent enough to deserve His love. And then the gospel blows that entire framework apart.
Grace means God gave you something you could not earn and did not deserve. It is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift given freely to people who had nothing to offer in return. I grew up watching my parents communicate in sign language, a world built on giving and receiving without the barrier of spoken words. Grace is something like that. It crosses every barrier, every limitation, and every obstacle we put up. You cannot work your way to God, but He came all the way to you. That is grace. Receive it today without condition.
Is there an area of your life where you have been trying to earn God’s approval rather than simply receive His grace? Identify it today, and spend a few minutes thanking God for a love that has no price tag.
Father, I confess that I sometimes treat Your grace like something I have to earn. Forgive me for that. Thank You for a love that came to me when I had nothing to offer. I receive Your grace today, freely and fully. Help me live from that place of security rather than striving. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
