The God Who Gives Good Things
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” - James 1:17
Most of us wake up and immediately begin cataloging what is wrong. The alarm is too early. The coffee is too weak. The news is too heavy. We are wired to notice what is missing before we celebrate what is present. But what if we flipped the script? What if the very first thing we did each morning was acknowledge the source of every good thing in our lives? That is not wishful thinking. That is biblical thinking.
James pulls back the curtain on the nature of God and shows us something remarkable. Every single good thing in your life traces its origin back to the same source: the Father of lights. That job, that friend, that moment of peace you felt last Tuesday afternoon when the sunlight hit just right. All of it came from Him. And here is what makes that truth even more steadying: God does not change. He is not generous one day and stingy the next. He does not shift like shadows on a wall. What He was yesterday, He is today, and He will be tomorrow.
Think about someone you know who is genuinely generous. Their generosity does not just bless the people around them; it changes the atmosphere of every room they walk into. People feel safe around them. People feel known. That is what God’s generosity does for the soul that recognizes it. When you understand that you are living under an open heaven, that God is continuously and intentionally pouring good things into your life, gratitude stops being a discipline and starts becoming a delight.
This month, begin each day by naming three specific good gifts from God. Not general blessings, but specific ones. A specific person. A specific provision. A specific moment of grace. Train your eyes to see the good before you rehearse the hard.
Father, forgive me for the mornings I have rushed past Your goodness without noticing it. Open my eyes today to every good gift You have placed in my path. Thank You for being unchanging, reliable, and generous beyond what I deserve. I want to begin this month with a grateful heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
