“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9

Grace might just be the most beautiful word in the human language because it means receiving what you do not deserve and not receiving the punishment you do deserve. It is God’s unmerited favor poured out on unworthy people like you and me, and it changes everything.

You cannot earn your way to God by working hard enough, being good enough, or volunteering enough. The gospel is unique because while every other religion is about man reaching up to God, Christianity is about God reaching down to man. Grace is a gift, and gifts are meant to be received, not earned. If you try to pay for a gift, you insult the giver. The moment you try to add your own works to grace, you nullify it. We must learn to rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross because our salvation is His achievement, not ours.

I remember trying to impress God with my good deeds early in my faith, treating my relationship with Him like a business transaction. I thought if I did enough good things, He would owe me blessings, and I was exhausted from striving. When I finally understood grace, it was like taking off a hundred pound backpack I didn’t even know I was wearing. I realized God loved me because of who He is, not because of what I did, and that freedom was intoxicating.

Thank God today specifically for His unmerited favor in your life. If you catch yourself trying to earn His love today, stop, take a breath, and simply receive His love instead.

God, thank You for the indescribable gift of grace. I acknowledge that I cannot earn it and I do not deserve it, but I receive it with a grateful heart. Help me to extend that same grace to the people around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
