“Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” - 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Nobody wakes up spiritually mature. Godliness is something you grow into through intentional practice. Paul uses the word “train,” which carries the idea of an athlete in rigorous preparation. Athletes do not become champions by accident. They show up every day, even when they do not feel like it, and they do the work that produces results over time. Spiritual growth is the same. Prayer, Scripture, worship, fasting, solitude: these are not just religious activities. They are the training ground where God shapes your character.

The good news is that you do not have to be perfect at the disciplines to benefit from them. You just have to show up. A five-minute prayer is better than no prayer. Reading one verse with your full attention is better than skimming a chapter. God honors the small, consistent acts of devotion. He meets you in the discipline, and over time, what started as an act of will becomes a way of life. That is transformation.

Identify one spiritual discipline you have been neglecting and commit to practicing it for the remaining days of October. Whether it is daily Scripture reading, prayer, or journaling, start small and stay consistent.

Lord, I want to be shaped by Your Word and Your Spirit. Help me be disciplined in the things that matter most. I do not want a faith that only shows up on Sundays. I want a faith that is woven into every day of my life. Train me, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
