The Challenge Of Trusting God In The Dark
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4
David did not write this psalm from a comfortable throne room. He wrote it from a life that included caves, betrayal, grief, and war. When he said he walked through the valley of the shadow of death, he meant it. This was not poetic exaggeration. David knew what it felt like to be in the dark, to wonder if God was still there, to keep walking even when he could not see what was ahead. And yet he said, “I will fear no evil.” Not “I feel no fear.” But “I will not be ruled by it.”
Trusting God in the dark is the hardest kind of trust. When everything is going well, faith feels easy. But when the diagnosis comes back bad, when the marriage is falling apart, when the prodigal has not come home, that is when faith gets tested at its roots. The challenge today is not to pretend the valley is not dark. It is to keep walking through it with your eyes fixed on the Shepherd. He knows this valley. He has walked it before you. And He will walk through it with you.
Write down one “dark valley” you are currently walking through or have walked through recently. Spend five minutes in silence, simply acknowledging that God is with you in that place. You do not have to have the answers. Just practice His presence.
Good Shepherd, thank You that You do not lead me around the hard places. You lead me through them. I choose today to trust You even in the dark. You are with me, and that is enough. Comfort me with Your presence and give me the courage to keep walking. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
