Quit Climbing a Ladder God Already Took Down

“For by grace you have been saved through faith And this is not your own doing it, is the gift of God not a result of works so that no one may boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9

When it comes to our faith journey, too often, there is somewhere along the way that we start thinking God’s love is something we have to earn. Maybe you grew up in a home where approval was based on performance, or maybe you’ve just always believed that if you want something good, you have to work for it.

Next thing you know, you bring that mindset into your relationship with God. You try harder, serve more, give more, show up every Sunday, and feel like maybe… just maybe… God will be pleased with you this time.

But that is not how grace works. God’s love isn’t a paycheck you receive after a week of perfect behavior. It’s not a reward for religious effort. Grace is a gift. Not because you did something to earn it, but because Jesus did everything necessary to give it.

Think about how exhausting it is to live like you have to measure up to keep God’s favor. That’s not freedom. That’s fear wrapped in spiritual language. And the truth is, it’s not even what God wants. He didn’t send His Son to die just to watch you exhaust yourself trying to be good enough. Jesus didn’t say “earn this” from the cross. He said, “It is finished.”

Grace is not a ladder you climb to reach God. It is a door He opened to come to you. That means you can stop performing and start resting. You can stop striving and start trusting. You can stop trying to prove something and simply receive what has already been done on your behalf.

If you’ve been wearing yourself out trying to earn God’s love, it’s time to let go of that weight. Lay down the checklist. Walk away from the pressure. Open your hands and receive the gift that’s already yours in Christ. You don’t have to climb when He’s already carried you.
