Perseverance That Produces Character
“Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” - Romans 5:3-4
Nobody signs up for suffering. But Paul says something remarkable about it: suffering, when processed through faith, produces something beautiful. It produces endurance, which produces character, which produces hope. The progression is not accidental. God is using the hard things in your life to build something in you that comfort and ease never could. The trials you are walking through are not pointless. They are part of the formation process.
October has been a month of deep reflection on faith, grace, identity, overcoming fear, and living out the gospel. If any of these devotions stirred up old wounds or brought hard things to the surface, do not be alarmed. That is often how God works. He surfaces what needs healing so He can heal it. He brings things into the light so they lose their power. Trust the process. Rejoice in the growth. Hope is being built in you right now.
Write down one thing you have learned about yourself or about God this month. How has this month of devotions shaped your faith? Celebrate the growth, however small it may seem.
God, thank You for the hard things that have made me stronger. I choose to rejoice today, not because the suffering was easy, but because I know You are using it for my good and Your glory. Build character in me, Lord. Build hope in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
