“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” - James 1:2-3

Obstacles can feel like roadblocks, interruptions to your plans, or barriers to where you want to go. It’s tempting to see them only as problems to solve or burdens to bear. But what if obstacles aren’t just hindrances? What if they’re opportunities, openings for God to work in ways you didn’t expect?

James tells us to count it all joy when we face trials because they test our faith and produce steadfastness. This doesn’t mean the obstacles themselves are enjoyable, but it means they are purposeful. Every challenge is an opportunity for growth, for trust, and for God to reveal something new in your life.

We mentioned Joseph a couple of days ago. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and later thrown into prison for a crime he didn’t commit. These were massive obstacles. Yet, each of these moments created opportunities. In slavery, Joseph proved his character and gained leadership skills. In prison, he interpreted dreams that eventually led him to Pharaoh’s court. God used the very obstacles Joseph faced to position him for greatness and to save countless lives during a famine.

What about you? Maybe your obstacle is a tough relationship, a career setback, or a season of waiting. While these moments may feel like detours, they might actually be the pathway to something greater. That difficult relationship could be teaching you patience and forgiveness. That career setback might redirect you to a purpose you would have never pursued otherwise. That season of waiting could be deepening your trust in God’s timing.

Obstacles stretch us, refine us, and often push us out of our comfort zones. They force us to rely on God in ways we might not if life always went smoothly. And in His hands, every obstacle can become an opportunity for growth, impact, and for His glory.

The next time you face an obstacle, don’t just ask, “Why is this happening?” Instead, ask, “God, what opportunity are You creating through this?” Trust that He is using even the hardest moments to prepare you for something greater. Obstacles may block your path, but they never block God’s plan.
