Not of This World

“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” - John 15:19

God often reminds us that we are not meant to conform to the patterns of this world. Instead, He commands us to be of Him: set apart, distinct, and aligned with a higher purpose.

The words of Jesus in John 15:19 illuminate this divine calling: “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” This profound statement underscores the truth that our allegiance is not to the transient values of the world but to the eternal kingdom of God.

Being of God and not of this world means living with a heavenly perspective. It’s an invitation to see the world through the lens of God’s love, grace, and truth. Our actions, decisions, and priorities should reflect the values of the kingdom rather than conforming to the fleeting trends of society.

In a world often driven by self-interest, being of God involves sacrificial love. Jesus exemplified this love on the cross, and as His followers, we are called to extend it to those around us. It’s a love that seeks the well-being of others, forgives without limit, and reflects the selfless character of our Savior.

Living out our call to be of God also means embodying holiness. God is holy, and He calls us to be holy as well. This involves a deliberate separation from sin and a commitment to righteousness. It’s not about isolation from the world but maintaining a distinctive lifestyle that mirrors the character of our Creator.

Practically, being of God involves intentional choices in our daily lives. It’s about choosing kindness when faced with cruelty, generosity in a culture of selfishness, and humility in a world that exalts pride. It’s embracing the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, as our guiding principles.

To be of God is to live with purpose. It’s recognizing that our identity is rooted in Christ, not in the world’s ever-changing standards. As we navigate the complexities of life, we can find assurance in God’s Word, seeking His guidance through prayer and aligning our lives with His eternal truths.

As we live out this divine purpose, our lives become a testimony to the transformative power of being set apart, showcasing the beauty of a life lived for Him in the midst of a world that desperately needs His light.
