Loving The People Right In Front Of You
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34-35
Jesus did not say the world would know we are His disciples by our theology or our church attendance. He said they would know by our love. Love is the primary evidence of a transformed life. And the love Jesus describes is not a warm feeling. It is a sacrificial choice. “As I have loved you” sets the standard, and Jesus loved us all the way to the cross. That is the bar.
Loving the people right in front of you is often harder than loving people in the abstract. It is easier to say you love humanity than to love the coworker who irritates you, the family member who keeps letting you down, or the neighbor whose lifestyle is completely different from yours. But that is exactly where the gospel gets lived out. Not in grand gestures, but in small, consistent acts of love that reflect the character of Christ to a watching world.
Identify one person in your immediate circle who is difficult to love right now. Ask God to give you His heart for that person, and then do one specific act of love for them today. Let it be intentional and let it cost you something.
Jesus, teach me to love the way You love. Not just the people who are easy to love, but the ones who are hard. Give me Your heart for people. Let my love be the evidence that You are real and that You have changed me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
