It Should Have Been You (4.18 Good Friday Ed Newton)

April 18, 20252 min read

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” - Isaiah 53:5

Good Friday isn’t just another day. It’s the day everything changed. It’s the day the weight of sin, the punishment of rebellion, and the wrath of God all fell on Jesus instead of you.

It should have been you.

The betrayal, the mocking, the crown of thorns digging into His skull. The whip that tore through His flesh, the nails that pinned Him to the cross, the suffocating weight of the world’s sin pressing down on Him, it was all meant for you. Yet, Jesus stepped in, willingly, taking your place without hesitation.

Think about that for a moment. The cross wasn’t just some historical event; it was a personal exchange. Your guilt for His grace. Your shame for His salvation. Your punishment for His peace. He didn’t have to do it, but He did because He loves you that much.

And yet, how often do we live as if His sacrifice wasn’t enough? How often do we carry the weight of our past, as if the cross didn’t already pay for it? How often do we still try to earn what has already been freely given?

Good Friday is a reminder that the work is finished. Jesus didn’t die for you to keep living in guilt and condemnation. He died to set you free. The blood He shed is proof that you are forgiven, redeemed, and made new. You don’t have to strive to be enough. His sacrifice already declared that you are.

So today, let the weight of what happened on that cross break you but let the love that held Him there restore you. Because the story doesn’t end in death. Sunday is coming. But for today, sit in the reality of what it cost. And never forget, He took your place because He couldn’t imagine eternity without you.
