“And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ‘Arise, anoint him, for this is he.’” - 1 Samuel 16:12

Have you ever felt unqualified for something God is calling you to do? Maybe you think, “I don’t have the experience for this,” or “Surely, God could find someone better.” If that’s where you find yourself, remember this: God doesn’t call you based on your resume. He calls you based on His plan, and He equips you as you go.

When Samuel came to anoint the next king of Israel, Jesse brought out all of David’s older brothers, men who seemed like obvious choices based on their size, strength, and stature. But God didn’t choose any of them. When Samuel asked if there were more sons, Jesse hesitated. Then, almost dismissively, he mentioned David, who was out tending sheep. Jesse’s tone implied that David couldn’t possibly be the one. After all, he was just a shepherd, a boy with no experience in leadership or battle.

But God doesn’t think the way we do. David’s time in the pasture wasn’t wasted, it was preparation. While tending sheep, David learned to lead, to defend, and to care. Those experiences shaped him for the great calling God had in store. What Jesse dismissed as inexperience, God saw as readiness.

You don’t need experience to step into God’s calling for your life. If He has called you, He will supply everything you need. David didn’t have the credentials of a king, but he had the heart of one. God looked past the outward qualifications and saw what truly mattered.

What is interesting is that Jesus, the King of Kings, is often called the Good Shepherd. The very title that some might have seen as a limitation became a reflection of Christ’s character.

If you’re feeling unprepared or unqualified, take heart. God doesn’t make mistakes. He knows exactly what He’s doing by calling you, and He will be with you every step of the way. With God, you already have everything you need to fulfill His purpose for your life.
