“Pray without ceasing.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:17

There’s often an expectation in Christian circles that prayer and Bible reading must follow a specific routine. We think we have to read a certain amount every day, pray at the same time each morning, and repeat the same words over and over. While routines can be helpful, they’re not the goal. The real aim is to have an open, honest line of communication with God that doesn’t fit into a rigid schedule but instead flows naturally in our everyday lives.

The Bible is full of examples of people who sought God in real, unscripted ways. David didn’t always pray at a set time. He poured out his heart to God throughout the day, -whether he was on the battlefield, running for his life, or just reflecting on the goodness of God. And Paul’s encouragement in 1 Thessalonians to “pray without ceasing” wasn’t about following a strict routine, it was about maintaining an ongoing conversation with God in every moment.

Reading the Bible doesn’t have to be a daily checklist. Sometimes it’s about opening the Word because you need a specific answer to a question, or simply because you need to hear God speak to you. It’s about going to God when you’re hurting, frustrated, or in need of direction. It’s about talking to Him like He’s a friend-real, raw, and without formality.

Don’t let the pressure of routine keep you from connecting with God. Make it a habit to keep that line of communication open at all times. Whether it’s a quick prayer before a big decision, a verse that speaks to you during your lunch break, or an honest cry for help in the middle of the night, God is always there. His desire is not for us to check off spiritual boxes, it’s for us to know Him deeply and be in constant relationship with Him, in every part of our lives.

Make today the day you talk to God freely, openly, and continually. Because the goal isn’t a perfect routine. It’s a life fully surrendered, open to His voice in every moment.
