A Fear of Others

“But Moses said, ‘O my Lord, please send someone else.’” - Exodus 4:13

When God called Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites, Moses didn’t hesitate to list reasons why he couldn’t do it. One of the most prominent reasons he gave was his fear of how Pharaoh would respond. Moses worried about what Pharaoh might say or do. He was more focused on Pharaoh’s potential reaction than on the God who was sending him.

In the same way, we often let the fear of what others will think stop us from stepping into the calling God has placed on our lives. We begin to wonder: What will they say about me? What if they don’t understand? What if I fail and they judge me? The fear of other people’s opinions can become a heavy burden that keeps us from moving forward. We get stuck thinking about how others will react, just as Moses got stuck thinking about how Pharaoh would react.

When we let fear of others control us, we take our eyes off God and His power. God wasn’t asking Moses to go in his own strength. He was asking Moses to trust that God would provide and make a way. The same is true for us. When God calls us to something, we don’t need to worry about the opinions of others. We need to trust that He has called us, and He will equip us to do what He’s asked.

If we let the fear of what others think dictate our actions, we’ll never fully step into the purpose God has for us. God didn’t ask Moses to succeed based on Pharaoh’s approval. He asked Moses to obey, and God would take care of the rest. The same is true for you. Don’t let fear of rejection or criticism stop you from pursuing what God has placed on your heart.

Focus on the One who has called you, not on the voices of others. When you trust God more than the opinions of people, you’ll find the courage to step out in faith and follow His calling. God is bigger than anyone’s opinion, and His purpose for you is far greater than any fear you may have.
